ABOUT FUNCTIONAL BASELINE TESTING & REHAB (FBT)
Functional Baseline Testing is a method by which clinicians may address functional activities with worker's compensation patients. This testing and treatment process will enable the therapist to provide an alternative to Work Hardening Therapy, a program increasingly fraught with reimbursement issues requiring expensive equipment and excessive square footage.

Functional Baseline Testing and Treatment equipment needs can be met for under $2500.00 (in addition to standard clinic equipment). Functional Baseline Testing and Treatment can be done in a standard, already equipped PT clinic. FBT is a method to prepare an injured worker for return to work. Every job has Material Handling and Non-Material Handling requirements. Functional Baseline Testing emphasizes job-matching and precise goal setting in these key areas of work. FBT is also a method to increase Worker's Compensation revenues by retaining patients formerly lost to providers with Work Hardening programs.
Why do Functional Baseline Testing? Decreased utilization of traditional Work Hardening. From the Provider perspective, Work Hardening is expensive to provide & poorly reimbursed. It requires equipment, space, time, and staff expense. There is the decreasing payment by worker's compensation PPO's. From the Payer perspective, insurance companies do not think Work Hardening is a good investment. They view Work Hardening as "expensive baby-sitting". Regarding results, there are mixed outcomes in Work Hardening. "50-80% success" and "Outcomes are unclear" is what the research indicates. Another reason to perform an FBT is the rise of "Modified Duty" programs plus the increased pressure for early return to work. There is also the need to furnish the appropriate treatment pathway for workers with behavioral obstacles preventing return to normal activity.

Identify protocols to administer evaluation of lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling tasks.
Apply the necessary elements of musculoskeletal screening.
List the elements and application of various positional tolerance tests.
Examine pain/disability questionnaires and other select Performance Criteria.
Outline and apply basic documentation skills for Functional Baseline Tests.
Construct functional goals in a treatment plan using the Job Matching approach.
Plan progress treatment using functional activities.
Explain how to bill for the service.

Ron has worked with over 300 companies, including Lockheed Martin Aeronautics; US Foods; Mars Incorporated; E.I. Du Pont; DS Waters; Shell Oil; International Paper; WestRock; Arizona Public Service Company; Association of California Water Agencies/Joint Powers Insurance Agency and the United States Navy; consulting on the development and implementation of innovative ergonomics programs for both individual plant sites and entire corporations.
He was chosen as the 2012 ASSE Ergonomics Practice Specialty Safety Professional of the Year, one of the 50 Most Influential People in Workers' Compensation by the 2014 SEAK National Workers' Compensation and Occupational Medicine Conference and received a 2016 Presidentís Award presented by the ASSE.
